The Inner Revolution: From Survival to Flow State

Michelle Dowker Season 2 Episode 24

In this unfiltered, channeled episode recorded mid-walk in the woods, is for the sensitive, self-aware leader who knows deep down:

What helped you survive is not what will help you thrive.

This is for you if you’re:

  • Tired of pushing, proving, and performing just to be “enough”
  • Feeling like you’re outgrowing your life, but don’t know what comes next
  • Finally ready to lead from your true identity, not the masks you built to survive

In this episode, we explore:

  • Why the False Self you created was never a flaw, but a function of survival
  • The grief of unlived potential (and how to transmute it)
  • The rise of sensitive, divergent leaders in a collapsing paradigm
  • What it actually takes to shift from hustle to flow, from “by me” to “through me” consciousness

This is the new paradigm. You don’t have to push. You don’t have to prove.
You just have to remember who you really are; and let the world see it.

Speaker 1:

Hello and welcome back. I am so glad that you're here. Today's episode is going to be a little bit different. So what happened was a few days ago I was taking a walk in the woods, and that's my place to meditate, and oftentimes when I do that I get sparks of inspiration. And so that day I was feeling a really strong message coming out and I pulled out my cell phone and what ended up happening was, once I started to share this thought, it started to become something bigger than me, like a channeled transmission. It came to me to share it here on my podcast with you, because if you're in my audience, you're finding what I'm sharing here helpful. You're really going to feel inspired by today's channeled message that came through me. Just so you know, the audio quality is going to be a little bit different because I was using my cell phone. I was outside, I didn't have a microphone and every once in a while you're going to hear some crunching of snow. Yes, we still have snow up here. So I hope you get something inspiring, perspective shifting, empowering from today's podcast session. Enjoy.

Speaker 1:

I've been reflecting on how far I've come over the years, and it's important to do that because oftentimes, when we're in the middle of it and it's so close to our face we forget. We forget where we came from, we forget where we're going and we forget where we are on the path in this moment. Along the way, my life now was my vision board 15 years ago, and it's different from my vision board 15 years ago. What I envisioned was living in the forest, living off the land, eating wild food, nutrient-dense food, with a partner that feels like home, and a job and a career that feels purposeful and impactful. And 15 years ago I thought I had that and looking back now I see that on the surface it looked like that's what was right and aligned and felt good, but deep down inside it wasn't. It was performative. All of my decisions that I was making at that time were based on survival. They were based on performance. They were based on trying to please other people. I became a doctor because that's what my mom wanted me to be and as I think about my own life and think about what I would have chosen had I not been pressured into the career path that I did decide to go on, I likely would have chosen very differently, and this is the thing.

Speaker 1:

There's a lot of grief that can come up with that I've been making have been based on what I thought I should do, based on expectations, based on trying to make other people proud, trying to please other people, trying to avoid other people feeling disappointed in your choices, your actions, what you're doing, what you're saying. That was my entire life and that's why I was in a relationship that was no longer aligned and it was forcing me to shrink and hide myself, and I still kept going because I was looking to be accepted somewhere, because I didn't accept myself, spent my life, whole life, feeling different, feeling like I didn't fit in, feeling like something was wrong with me, I was too sensitive, and the thing is I didn't fit in. And now I see, looking back, there's a reason for that. Of course, I couldn't understand it back then, and so this is the other piece to it is that there can be a lot of grief for the life that you could have had, but you didn't, because of the conditioning, because of the performative behaviors, because of survival, because of programmed unconscious conditioning and scripts that you didn't agree to, but you were forced to accept, unwillingly, outside of your knowledge, that that's actually what was happening and that that was actually what was running the show, your unconscious programming. And then, once you move past the grief, you let it move through you, you don't hang on to it, you don't identify with it, you let it move through like a passing train, knowing that it will shift, it will change, it will transmute into something different if you allow it to just be as it is.

Speaker 1:

Once the grief moves past which I sat with a lot then there's this realization that everything that I did, all the choices that I made, every action that I took, was all based on what I knew at the time and what I knew to be able to survive and stay safe, meet my needs of safety, especially because I was operating from survival mode, as most of us are, before we actually realize what's actually going on right, especially if you're a highly sensitive person and you've been grown up with the hegemonic narrative that you're too sensitive, you're too much, you're not enough, you're broken. You need to grow a thicker skin, you need to fix yourself, there's something wrong with you. All of these things program your unconscious mind to believe that that's the truth and you've got to shape, shift yourself, you've got to mask yourself, you've got to change yourself, you've got to try to force yourself into the mold of normative narratives in order to belong, in order to fit in, because that's what you that's like. The foundation, like developmental need, is acceptance, and if you've been fed all this, it's really hard to accept yourself, right when you're being told that you're not acceptable. And this is the thing I realize now that I was built this way for a reason We've been operating from this hegemonic narrative, the cultural norms that have been passed down to us generation after generation.

Speaker 1:

And these cultural norms needed to be there at some point along the lineage in order to survive. Needed, not really, but this is what was, this is what they believed all those generations ago. And so now there's a lot of operating from control, operating from a patriarchal lens, operating from a colonial lens, operating from a corporatism lens, more, more, more. Bye, bye, bye. We need to hustle, we need to push. You need to think about all these external things, over accepting yourself, over your own inner alignment, over what actually lights you up.

Speaker 1:

And what I've come to realize through my own work, and I'm sure you're seeing and have realized as well is, especially if you're highly sensitive, neurodivergent, that doesn't fit, it doesn't feel good, you forced yourself to do it all these years, crammed yourself into a box. It only caused destruction of your soul. It only caused you to feel exhausted. Because you're working against yourself, you're pushing against yourself. For so many clients I've seen over the years, that leads to not only exhaustion and burnout and soul destruction. It also leads to physical symptoms, chronic illness. Autoimmunity is a huge one, especially for women, and 80% of autoimmune sufferers are women. Because we're working against who we are, because we don't accept who we are, because we're trying to force ourselves into the hegemonic narrative boxes that we've been conditioned to believe that we need to be in, and it's making us sick, it's causing our system to reject ourselves, because we believe deep down, unconsciously, that our true self is unacceptable.

Speaker 1:

Now we're at a really important, pivotal point. Right now. Theorists call it the fourth turning. There's other social change theories that prove to us that we're at this inflection point where some old ways are collapsing to make way for new, higher level ways, and part of that collapsing is this paradigm, this performative paradigm of more, more, more, do, do, do, push, push, push. All the paradigm stuff that, as us highly sensitive and or neurodivergent people, we've grown up saying this doesn't feel right, and then we keep getting told no, you're imagining things, you're being unrealistic. No, this is the way it is. It's you that's the problem. No, this is the way it is. It's you that's the problem. Now we're seeing that actually. No, we're like canaries in the coal mine. We've been picking up on this far, far, far earlier than the rest of society, and now the rest of society is starting to catch up.

Speaker 1:

You can see, looking around you, more and more people are awakening. They can't continue like this anymore. They're saying no, something's got to change. There's something different that we need to be doing other than how we are operating now. And this is why I didn't fit in, and this is why so many of the people that I worked with felt different, didn't fit in, could not follow those hegemonic narratives, because we're meant to break them. We're meant to lead something different. We're meant to show the way to a higher level way of being other than what we've been operating from, because what helps you to survive is not what helps you to thrive, and we have been a society in survival and we can't continue that way anymore. We're at a turning point. It needs to change.

Speaker 1:

So those of us who've never fit into that model are here to help to change that model through starting first with yourself. You go first. If you're a leader, you lead first. You be the change that you wish to see. You lead by example, by shifting this narrative within yourself first, by realizing, owning and accepting the fact that what helped you to survive is not what's going to help you to thrive, to understand that push-hustle force culture and trying to fit into normative boxes is not the solution, not only for you. Fit into normative boxes is not the solution, not only for you, but a lot of neurotypical people also don't do so well in these normative boxes and hegemonic narratives that we've been forcing ourselves to follow.

Speaker 1:

Part of this new paradigm that we are stepping into it's a fact that this is happening is that it goes deeper than what you see on the outside. It goes deeper than just the external facade that the internal, the internal, everything that's going on within you is what shapes what's going on outside of you, for yourself and everybody. It always starts from within by shifting that inner narrative, by shifting the unconscious programming that has been basically operating and running the show and telling you how to think, how to act, what to say, what to do, how to speak. Through your choices, your relationship, your careers, all the things, 95% of all of our choices, decisions, thoughts, behaviors come from our unconscious programming. And so, no matter how much you consciously want something, if your unconscious mind is programmed differently than that, it's going to override every single time. And so changing that inner paradigm from the level of your unconscious mind is what changes your filters, your unconscious filters of how you are actually seeing the world, like looking through a pair of lenses. This is your reticular activating system and shifting that inner narrative right that's looping in your mind, telling you what to do, what not to do, how you think about yourself, who you think you are. This is all part of your default mode network. Your reticular activating system and your default mode network play on each other and they feed each other and they make this endless looping cycle of if you've been operating from the survival mode and you haven't been addressing that, you're going to always be thinking why did I say that? Why did I? You know, how could I have said that differently? So that that person doesn't get upset or doesn't feel triggered? How can I change myself to fit the narrative? How can I be doing something that looks good on the outside. I'm trying to think of other examples right now. There's tons. I think you get the idea.

Speaker 1:

Now the thing is, is one of these paradigm shifts is shifting from this do, do, do, act, act, act, push, push, push, force, force, force, control culture? That's level two consciousness, out of four levels. Level one consciousness is to me, so you think you're a victim and you have no power and control and everything is just happening to you. Level two consciousness is by me, so you understand that when you act and do things, you can make a difference, you can change your experience, your reality and this is where society is locked in at the moment is this push, hustle, control, force culture of you just need to push harder, you just need to fake it. Till you make it, you just need to work harder, do more, push harder, try to control it, and that's till you make it, you just need to work harder, do more, push harder, try to control it, and that's how it, that's how you make it happen, and it works to an extent.

Speaker 1:

However, there's a limit, there's a cap, there's a ceiling. You only have so much time, you only have so much energy, and when you are putting your energy, time and focus towards something that's not aligned, you have less energy to be able to expend on anything, because it takes sucks so much of your power to be doing things that are not aligned, you leak your energy. It's like a sieve Versus. When you understand that all of this starts on the inside and it starts by aligning with yourself, and it starts by releasing all of those outdated survival social conditioned programming that you did never agree to in the first place, so that you can actually connect with the real you underneath of it, because what happens is, when we are operating from the survival, we act from this place called the false self. It's a protective way in order to survive, and it helped us survive, and there's no shame in it, because that's what we needed to do, especially in our formative years, when we didn't have any other choice but to be where we were, with who we were, in the programming that we were exposed to. And so we adopted this false self in order to get through that, in order to survive the best that we could, and we did and that's why you're here now, and to thank yourself for that, not to feel guilty, not to shame yourself, and understand that what helped you to survive is not what helps you to thrive. So, yes, that was great, that was wonderful. That helped you. Okay, maybe that wasn't wonderful, however, that false self helped you.

Speaker 1:

However, now you're out of that situation. It's not helping you anymore. It's holding you back. That mask that you're out of that situation. It's not helping you anymore. It's holding you back. That mask that you're wearing. That false self that you're identifying yourself with is now capping you from thriving, from fulfillment, from aligning with your true self. Your true self is the one that is underneath all of those layers of conditioning, all those layers of limiting belief, all of those layers of thinking of what you should be doing, who you should be, how you should be in order to survive the hegemonic narrative. And now we're at this inflection point in society where people are waking up to the fact that we can't continue this way. We can't continue all masked up in our false self anymore, because it's killing us. It's actually killing us.

Speaker 1:

Look at what's happening in the medical system with chronic illness. Honestly, I'm not in that niche anymore. However, years ago I was. I was working with women with autoimmunity, chronic illness, endometriosis like me, who had tried all the therapies had tried all the treatments, have tried all the therapeutic diets, even up to the strictest meat only carnivore meat, ruminant meat, salt and water only, which is what I did myself, and it helped to an extent. However, it that also only took us so far, and that's what brought me to the work that I'm doing now is realizing that it's this inner reconditioning, relearning, remembering ourselves to wholeness is the solution that everything that we do topically and superficially is never going to address, never going to help us to step out of that survival and into thriving and flourishing, reconnecting with your true self underneath all of those layers and aligning with who you really are, that inner, deep soul, purpose, mission and vision that you know that you have.

Speaker 1:

It's been there all along, and I see this over and over again with the clients that I work with is when I help them to start to decode themselves and better understand who they are, how they're designed. I don't tell them, I help them. I act as a mirror to show them, and when I reflect it back to them, they tell me over and over again. I've known this instinctively all of my life. It's been there this whole time. I just didn't trust it. I just didn't accept it because I was told that was not acceptable. And once I mirror back to them, it's like this light clicks and they go. That's who I really am, and now I can understand that and I can see it and I can trust it, and now I can give myself permission to own it and step into it and embody it and live it.

Speaker 1:

And when you do, what happens is you step into level three, consciousness, which is through me. And that's when you step into a state of wholeness and alignment where you end up in a flow state. Flow state is in Taoist culture. They call it wu wei, effortless action. Flow state doesn't mean you don't do anything. Flow state means that what you're doing is so aligned that it's effortless because it's innate, it's natural. It's aligned with who you are and who you're meant to be, and why you're doing is so aligned that it's effortless because it's innate, it's natural. It's aligned with who you are and who you're meant to be and why you're meant to be here in the first place.

Speaker 1:

And flow state is when you operate from a place of coherence. Your nervous system has capacity. You are operating from this place, where this flow, you're not no longer operating from force and control and push and that changes your frequency. And this isn't like woo woo, this is actually. Heart math institute talks about this in terms of coherence. Your heart rate exhibits an electromagnetic frequency that impacts your level of where you are in terms of are you calm, are you regulated, are you at peace or are you in crisis? Are you stressed, are you operating from a place where you're kind of all the way over here or everything is chaos? And I'm sure you can think back and look at people who have been in either one of these two states and you can feel the difference without them even saying a word. And that's the thing. That's the difference right there. That's the frequency I'm talking about, and it's measurable and part of this new paradigm that we're stepping into.

Speaker 1:

This change beyond the performance, looking deeper than the facade, is understanding that actually, the key to all of this is this deeper flow state, is this deeper level of through me flow state, of being in coherence, being congruent with yourself, acting out of integrity and authenticity and genuineness of who you are and how you're being, and how your being has more impact than what you're doing or your skills or your job. It's how you're being in. Anything that you're doing has more impact on the people around you than anything that you're actually saying, and this is something that I've discovered and my clients discover as I lead them through this journey, and they can see it that it's not about well, I guess I need to have a different job, to do something different, because this doesn't feel aligned. Sometimes it is, and sometimes it's actually just about shifting your inner programming and how you're being, and the filters that you're seeing through and that frequency that you're emanating shifts everything around you. And sometimes it's not actually about changing anything that you're doing. It's actually about changing who you're being on the inside, and here's a great example of that Caregivers. Oftentimes I see this a lot.

Speaker 1:

People in caregiving professions were oftentimes parentified. They were the ones that were caregiving others when they were young, and so it becomes so easy and familiar to then adopt a caregiving role of taking care of others, whether that's in a medical profession, whether that's in any type of profession, a service profession or anything else. The thing is is that the intention behind the action has been for them to be seeking a sense of validation, worth and importance from caregiving others, from taking care of others, and the problem with that is is that, for the amount of energy and effort that you put out, you're never going to get back the level of sense of value and importance and security and validation that you're looking for from the outside, because you need to start first from the inside, becoming whole, aligned with yourself, accepting yourself, operating from flow instead of chasing in order to get something out of it. And when you do, then you step into your flow state, you become into overflow, and that's when you can be doing the exact same job, caregiving others but you're doing it because you're in overflow and you can't not share that overflow with others, because you see that the more that you share, the more that you get from within. That's the difference is you don't change the job, but you change the intention behind what you're doing and your actions right, who you're being behind what you're doing. And that changes whether or not you're going to burn out or whether you're going to be energized by anything that you do.

Speaker 1:

And this is just one example of many. This can be taken in any theme, any situation, any practice that you're doing. There's so much more nuance to this, all of this to say, especially if you know that you've been different all of your life and you thought it was a liability to be too sensitive. And now you're seeing. Well, maybe it isn't a liability, maybe it's not dysfunction, maybe it's discernment, and actually, maybe this is my strength that I'm supposed to be leveraging in my work, because I can pick up on things that other people can't. I can read between the lines, I can pick up on patterns that other people miss. I have creative thinking that comes up with innovative, out-of-the-box solutions that other people haven't even dreamed of. And these are the things that are needed now more than ever.

Speaker 1:

Things are changing and we're experiencing situations we've never encountered before, and we need people to come up with solutions that we've never thought of before, need people to come up with solutions that we've never thought of before, and we need people who are able to lead through coherence and congruence and integrity, because that's actually what's going to make a better impact on the people than trying to push, hustle and control, try to manipulate right, try to act out of integrity, acting from a mask that's only going to take you so far, and the deeper healing happens when you're fully aligned, when you're operating from a different electromagnetic frequency. It impacts not only you but the people around you, and then they have something to attune to. Like a guitar tuner, you act as an exemplar to allow them to do the same, and this is actually how we're going to be able to move forward into this new paradigm in a way that's actually the most supportive is actually to be operating and work on this inner coherence and inner congruence, first and foremost, because that's what changes the game for everything. So then we can all continue moving up that ladder, that consciousness ladder, to level four, which is, as me, understanding that I am you, you are me. We are all connected by something deeper than what we actually see around us. There is no good or bad, there is no right or wrong. It all just is. That's non-duality. However, the judgment and the social conditionings and the cultural beliefs that we have are what label causes us to believe that anything is right or wrong, good or bad. It's what causing us to operate from this us versus them narrative that's keeping us divided instead of allowing us to come together as a whole. That's what the solution is to become whole, but it starts with you first. You have to become whole first, and then you can lead the way to help guide the people you are here to guide to become whole. And as we all become whole, then we all become whole together. That's the solution.

Speaker 1:

If you want peace around you, if you want to see more peace instead of war, it's got to start from within and find your peace within instead of being at war with yourself, and then you can help lead the way. And you might be thinking but I'm just one person. How can I change billions and billions of people? You're not supposed to. You're supposed to start with you and then you start with the people around you that are aligned with who you are, what your frequency is, because not everybody will be, especially if you're built like me and my clients.

Speaker 1:

You act as a mirror and some people get triggered. You show people what they haven't seen about themselves that maybe could use some aligning. And some people don't want to see it because change is hard. It's right, it's a human nature to want to stay with the familiar, and some people don't want that mirror reflected to them of like what maybe isn't an alignment for them, how they aren't whole within themselves, how they aren't whole within themselves, how they aren't aligned with themselves, how they're not acting in integrity and it's no shame on them. They're doing what they think they need to be doing to survive, and you're not here to force or manipulate anybody to change if they don't want to or if they're not ready to.

Speaker 1:

You're here to be the guide, and the people who want what you have to offer will ask you for it. They will see your example as a lighthouse and they will see your light and follow it. And these are the people that you're here to change, not by making them change, but by helping them become whole within themselves, by reflecting their wholeness, so that they can have something to attune to as an exemplar. And that's how they become whole. And then they act as lighthouses for the people that they're supposed to be guiding home to themselves, and so on, and so on. This is the ripple effect and eventually, over time, we all come home to ourselves and become whole. And I don't know exactly what that's going to look like, and neither do you.

Speaker 1:

We're at a bifurcation point right now where it can go either way. It's kind of like a stream hitting a blockade, and it can either go this way, it can go this way, and we don't know what that outcome is. We can guess, we can theorize. However, it depends on the state of what's going on right now. Theorists say, at bifurcation points, at inflection points, the system is highly sensitive, more sensitive than usual, to any adjustments and shifts that any one person makes.

Speaker 1:

And so, right now, your job is to be that wholeness, to be in coherence, to be in congruence, to operate from alignment, to operate from flow state, to operate from this place where you are acting out of integrity, acting as the leader who is the change you want to see, not from the external facade, but what's going on on the inside, in the electromagnetic frequency that you are emanating and the example that you're showing about giving other people permission to be able to be whole themselves, to be able to be themselves, to be able to follow their inner soul, inner knowing, inner compass, rather than what the hegemonic narrative told them that they should be doing, because that's the way they have to do it, because that's not working anymore. And so, right now, in this inflection point, your journey and your wholeness and your integrity and your coherence and your congruence and your authenticity and you becoming the lighthouse, is more important than ever. Even if you don't necessarily see the bigger picture, because the system is so sensitive right now your contribution matters. And so, if you've been, I've had so many clients who've been like, yeah, you know, I feel guilty, following what my soul wants me to do versus following what I think I should be doing, what I've been conditioned to do Versus following what I think I should be doing what I've been conditioned to do. And instead of thinking about it that way because that's that survival behavior, that survival conditioning, that's looping and telling you right, because shaming and shitting it has been our way to motivate ourselves to do better, to try to fit into something that we were never destined to fit in. And it's really important to change that inner paradigm and change that inner narrative and change your perspective on how you're seeing all of this. And it's one thing to see it consciously right For me to explain this perspective and you go, yeah, I get it. And then it's another for your unconscious mind to actually get it, for you to reprogram it, for you to release those layers of shoulds and limiting beliefs and unconscious programming that has been convincing you that this is how you need to be thinking and looking and doing and being and thinking and believing so that you can create that new paradigm from within, so that you can be that lighthouse that helps others around you, so that we can collectively create that paradigm without externally around us together as a whole.
